Personal Bio

Personal & Professional Bio

Hi, I’m Stuart — and I thought it might help to share a little about me before you decide whether Back2Basics is right for you.

I grew up in Chippenham and went to Hardenhuish School. Sport was always a big part of my life, particularly rugby, which I played locally from a young age through to adulthood. That’s ultimately what led me into physiotherapy — with a bit of encouragement from my mum, despite being told at school I wasn’t particularly “academic”.

As it turns out, physiotherapy suited me perfectly. It’s a balance of practical, hands-on work and problem solving, and it allowed me to develop in a way that traditional classroom learning never quite did.

I studied at Keele University and have now been a physiotherapist for over 15 years, working across the NHS and private practice, including more than a decade at Physio Plus in Chippenham. Three years ago, I set up Back2Basics and have learned a huge amount since — not just clinically, but about people, lifestyle, and what really helps long-term.

How I work now

My approach has evolved over time.

I look at the body as a whole, particularly how we move — starting from the feet and working upwards. Much of this is influenced by the Anatomy in Motion approach, alongside my background in manual therapy, acupuncture, and exercise-based rehabilitation.

I often work with more complex or long-standing issues, where things haven’t quite resolved with more traditional approaches. I try to understand how the body is functioning mechanically and then build bespoke exercises and treatment plans around that — specific to the individual in front of me.

For some people, that might involve a structured rehabilitation programme (for example post-surgery or returning to sport). For others, it may be simpler changes to movement, posture, or daily habits that make the biggest difference.

The bigger picture

Alongside this, I place a strong emphasis on the wider factors that influence health and recovery:

  • Sleep
  • Stress
  • Movement
  • Lifestyle

I’ve found that small, realistic improvements in these areas often have a big impact over time. It’s also something I work on in my own life, so I understand how challenging it can be to get the balance right.

My aim is to give you the right amount of support and information — whether that’s a single session or a longer-term plan — in a way that feels manageable and relevant to you.

Life outside work

Life has changed quite a bit over the last few years. My wife and I now have two young children — Finnley (2½) and Rupert (6 months) — who keep us very busy but are the best part of everything.

I still enjoy being active — walking, swimming, running, paddleboarding, climbing — and more recently padel. I love being outdoors, travelling when we can, and catching up with friends over a beer.

Like most people, I’m still working on finding the right balance between everything, which helps me relate to the challenges many people face day to day.

My aim

Ultimately, I’m interested in longevity — helping people move better, feel better, and stay active for as long as possible.

Whether that’s:

  • Recovering from injury
  • Following a structured rehab plan
  • Improving how you move day to day
  • Or simply feeling more in control of your body

I see the body as a bit of a puzzle, and my job is to help you piece it together in a way that works for you.

Professional Bio

With over 15 years of experience in physiotherapy, I have worked across a range of NHS departments over a two-year rotational period, including orthopaedic outpatients, mental health, respiratory, neurology, and intermediate care.

During my time at Physio Plus in Chippenham, working under the guidance of Andrew Baldwin, I developed a strong interest in human movement patterns — particularly the role of the foot and how the body functions from the ground upwards. Alongside this, I gained valuable experience working with the Stoke City girls’ football team during my undergraduate training, and later with Old Redcliffians Rugby first team for two seasons.

Over the years, I have developed skills across a range of treatment techniques, including manual therapy, manipulation, massage, acupuncture, and electrotherapy. I have also placed increasing emphasis on exercise-based rehabilitation. Through experience, I recognised that traditional exercise programmes are often difficult to maintain once pain settles, which led me to develop more bespoke, adaptable exercise strategies that can be integrated into everyday life — even for those with busy or demanding schedules.

I believe that small, consistent improvements in how we move and function day to day — such as sitting, standing, walking, and breathing — can have a significant impact on long-term health and wellbeing.
